Final ADR Touch

Final ADR Touch

Arman Darbo joined co-star Tiger Chen and producer Zhang Daxing for a voice-recording session that wrapped up the ADR work on Kung Fu Man in Beijing on Sunday 24th April. In other rooms around, actors were dubbing all kinds of movies, letting Arman feel this extraordinarily emulating atmosphere full of sounds of galloping horses, crying lovers and swords fights! ADR is widely used in Chinese productions and China has a long tradition of dubbing foreign films into Mandarin which started in the 1930s. There were a total of 4 ADR sessions for Arman to complete his sound/dialogue work on Kung Fu Man. This last recording day was also the occasion for Arman to see for the first time the exciting rough cut of Kung Fu Man and spell out his opening lines of the film: “people always ask me about Ping…” In between takes, lead actor Tiger Chen checked out the progress of Arman’s kungfu skills and was impressed by his young friend’s kicks and punches. The movie will have both a Chinese and an English language versions for distribution in different territories. Kung Fu Man is slated for release all across China in August 2011.

On Saturday 19th February, Arman had a dreamlike dinner with China film icon Jackie Chan at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Beijing right after finishing the ADR work for Kung Fu Man at a voice recording studio. Since it was the first reunion of the star’s friends since the onset of the Rabbit Year, Jackie treated Arman to a very generous red envelope and kind wishes for the future. Enjoying the delicious Cantonese dishes from Yu restaurant, Arman was cracking jokes with an old pal at his table. And indeed, Jackie’s stunt team coordinator and kungfu artist master He Jun was happy to see Arman again after an unforgettable collaboration on Kung Fu Man in the mountains of Yunnan in 2009. In the middle of the evening, Jackie told to an impressed Arman: “One day, you will be someone…” As the party moved on to the Davidoff lounge, Arman parted with Jackie after immortalizing the encounter in pictures and promising to follow the master’s secret advice for continuing practicing martial arts and Chinese characters! Hopefully, these two can be united on screen some day!

Arman Darbo wrapped up the shooting of his second feature film Kung Fu Man at the end of February 2010 with a 4-day cruise from Hong Kong to Taiwan onboard the Costa Classica. Together with Director Ning Ying, Director of photography Sean O’Dea, assistant director Cao Lei and a small camera crew, Arman embarked the giant cruise liner to complete shooting of the movie which started in October of last year. In these last scenes, Arman a.k.a. Christopher Smith roams around the ship owned by his rich but distant father, being generally lonely and bored by this high-society adult atmosphere, reading comic books, staring out to sea or melancholically playing the piano, all the while dreaming of his super heroes’ fantasy world. Filming time aside, the trip was also great fun, reuniting with old friends from the movie crew in Hong Kong, waking up in the middle of South China Sea on the first morning, meeting with the Italian officers and attending the Captain’s party! And for sure, somewhere out there beyond the sea horizon, Ping a.k.a. Kung Fu Man was watching over Arman… because super heroes never die…

Filming in Mongolia

Filming in Mongolia

In July 2009, Arman spent 3 weeks in Mongolia filming a documentary-drama movie among the Tsaatans minority people. Shot on location in Northern Mongolia, the film is about a French boy who gets lost in the Western taiga on the border with Russia, and is adopted by a protective Tsaatan family. The Tsaatans are an ethnic minority counting no more than 350 souls living and breeding reindeers in the remote and inaccessible mountains on the border with Russia. Playing his own role, Arman befriends a Tsaatan boy named Batuumur. Together they look after the reindeers, attend a mystic shaman ceremony and read French comics book Asterix. Initially judgmental and self-centered, Arman comes to understand how community values and harmony with nature are important in harsh conditions of survival, a lesson that changes his world view and makes him a better person altogether. The filming expedition to the Tsaatan area became a journey of discovery of Mongolia as well as a test of endurance for Arman and the young enthusiastic film crew. Sleeping in a tent on a glacier at 3000 meters altitude, riding horses under the rain through the mountains, crossing rivers on a raft, was challenging yet worth every effort, as the high-definition images of virgin land areas are absolutely breathtaking and never before shown on TV. The 26-minute film is produced by the Education TV Channel Mongolia, a national satellite channel, as part of a series of programs about ethnic minorities in this country.
